Kindness rocks hit an all-time high in popularly in 2020 when everyone was looking for ways to inspire kindness and spread love to others, while the world was somewhat shut down.

My family would see kinds rocks on our daily family walks together and were inspired to make their own. They’d paint rocks we’d find in the yard, or we even bought a set of flat river rocks like this one when they were really into it, and then on our walks, set them out for others to find. Over time, they’d watch for their rocks and see where they’d been picked up and moved, and were always excited to find new ones left out for them.

Just last week we were hiking in a new spot and my daughter found a rock from Sioux Falls, South Dakota that she picked up and hiked with, before leaving on another spot of the trail.

It’s a great craft to do solo or with family or friends, and the possibilities for designs and inspiration are limitless. While my kids are pretty creative, sometimes they also need inspiration to get started. That’s how I began my search for children appropriate (ages 8 and up) that they could actually paint and didn’t require insane amount of detail with a tiny paintbrush.
